In Barbados, to obtain a prescription for medical cannabis, a patient must meet the following criteria:

  1. Medical Evaluation: The patient must be evaluated by a licensed doctor who is authorized to recommend medicinal cannabis.
  2. Qualifying Condition: The general guidance is that patients must have a condition that a licensed medical practitioner deems appropriate for cannabis treatment under the Medicinal Cannabis Industry Act, 2019. While the exact list of qualifying conditions is not publicly detailed, it typically includes chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer-related symptoms, and other serious or chronic illnesses
  3. Doctor’s Recommendation: If the doctor determines that medicinal cannabis is an appropriate treatment, they will issue a recommendation.
  4. Prescription and Dispensation: Once approved, the prescription is issued, and the patient can obtain medicinal cannabis through licensed dispensaries or pharmacies.
  5. Regulatory Oversight: The BMCLA oversees the entire process, ensuring that all handling, prescribing, and dispensing of medicinal cannabis complies with the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Industry Act, 2019
